Armed Forces Day is celebrated the third Saturday in the month of May.

This year it will be observed today, Saturday, May 21.

For the past 10 years, and again this year, Standing Stone Detachment, Marine Corps League of Huntingdon and the Huntingdon County Veterans Association will participate in the wreath-laying ceremony at the Wall of Healing at Van Zandt Veterans Medical Center in Altoona marking Armed Forces Day 2022.

Area residents are encouraged to attend and be part of the ceremony. A bag lunch will be provided until noon and the actual ceremony begins at 1 p.m.

What do we know of the history of Armed Forces Day? Briefly, Aug. 31, 1949, then Secretary of Defense Louis Johnson announced the creation of Armed Forces Day to replace what had been separate Army, Navy and Air Force Days. (Note the obvious absence of a Marine Corps Day).

A year later, President Harry S. Truman, in a presidential proclamation dated Feb. 27, 1950, announced the formation of the day, a day to honor our brave young men and women who fought for the freedoms that we all enjoy to this very day.

Finally, President Dwight David Eisenhower, regarding Armed Forces Day and its importance, stated in 1953 that: “Today let us, as Americans, honor the fighting men and women. For it is he and she, the soldier, the sailor, the Airman, the Marine—who have fought to preserve freedom.”

As we celebrate Memorial Day May 30, let us also celebrate Armed Forces Day today, the 21st of May, and celebrate all veterans of all wars.
